The New York State Death Index contains information on deaths recorded in New York State. This collection helps individuals in locating New York State death records between 1880 and 1956. This index contains information on place and date of death, gender, age at death and the State file number. The images in this collection have been obtained through the outstanding work and efforts of Reclaim the Records. Due to the poor original documents these images are low-quality.<br><br>Death certificates represent one of the key primary sources for family information, typically being issued within days of a death and having many details about a person's' life. Frequently, they contain age, birthplace, parents' names and birthplaces and the cause of death. For deaths referenced in this index copies of original death certificates can be obtained from the <A href="https://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/death.htm" target="_blank">New York State Department of Health for a fee.
