This collection is an index to notarial records throughout the Netherlands. Notarial records are kept by notaries, public officers appointed by the Dutch government to provide services including drafting, authenticating, and registering legal documents. Documents useful for genealogical research notarized in this collection include wills and testaments, estate inventories/divisions, marriage contracts, guardianships, and mortgages.

Notarization began in the Netherlands in the 16th century. At that time, no notarial records were kept in the provinces of Drenthe, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Limburg, and Overijssel. However, in 1811, the Netherlands was annexed by the French Empire causing a standardization of notarial law and notaries being appointed in these provinces.

Information in these records includes the names of the applicants, their residence, occupation, and the notarial record date and type. Please see the archive list below for locality coverage. The majority of the records date between 1600 and 1935, though the extent of year coverage can vary by locality.

Records included in this collection came from the following archives:

Drenthe

Drents Archief (Drenthe Archive)

Friesland

Tresoar (AlleFriezen)

Gelderland

Heritage Achterhoek and Liemers (Erfgoedcentrum Achterhoek en Liemers)

Regional Archives Nijmegen (Regionaal Archief Nijmegen)

Regional Archives Rivierenland (Regionaal Archief Rivierenland)

Regional Archive of Zutphen (Regionaal archief Zutphen)

Limburg

Municipal Archive Venray (Gemeente Venray, gemeentearchief)

Municipal Archives Roermond (Municipal Archives Roermond)

Rijckheyt, center for regional history (Rijckheyt, centrum voor regionale geschiedenis)

Municipal Archives Roermond (Gemeentearchief Roermond)

North Brabant

City Archive Breda (Stadsarchief Breda)

Regional Archive Langstraat Heusden Altena (Streekarchief Langstraat Heusden Altena)

Regional Archive Tilburg (Regionaal Archief Tilburg)

Regional Historic Centre Eindhoven (Regionaal Historisch Centrum Eindhoven)

West-Brabant Archive (West Brabants Archief)

North Holland

Amsterdam City Archives (Stadsarchief Amsterdam)

North Holland Archives (Noord-Hollands Archief)

Regional Archive Alkmaar (Regionaal Archief Alkmaar)

Waterlands Archive (Waterlands Archief)

West Frisian Archive (Westfries Archief)

South Holland

City Archives Rotterdam (Stadsarchief Rotterdam)

Heritage Leiden and Environs (Erfgoed Leiden en Omstreken)

Municipal Archive The Hague (Haags Gemeentearchief

Regional Archives Dordrecht (Regionaal Archief Dordrecht)

Utrecht

Regional History Center Vecht and Venen (Regionaal Historisch)

RHC Rijnstreek and Lopikerwaard (RHC Rijnstreek en Lopikerwaard)

The Utrecht Archives (Het Utrechts Archief

Zeeland

Zeeland Archives (Zeeuws Archief)
